Activity Trainer Update (version 1.1)

AES has released version 1.1 of the Activity Trainer.  This is a small software update and can be quickly installed using the following link: http://www.dttrainer.com/atupdates.

This update makes it even easier to replay an activity or step, fixes several problems that prevent the Activity Trainer from running well or at all on some systems, and improves several features as well.

New Features:

  • Put restart button on lower left of training screen.  Now to restart just click the restart button instead of having to exit the activity and then restart.  This feature just makes it even easier to repeat an activity or step.

Major Problems Fixed:

  • Audio problem that either prevented activity videos from playing or even crashed the program on some computers.
  • Display problem where in some cases the "Done" button did not display correctly while playing an activity.
  • Error Log email problem that would not connect to our email server.

Minor Problems Fixed:

  • Moved "Result" entry dialog box (when activated by pressing the "R" key) from center of screen toward the upper left part of the screen so that the activity movie is not or less obscured.
  • Disabled the 1-5 scale for the result for "Unknown" and "Independent" where the scale is meaningless.  The 1-5 scale only applies to "Physical", "Verbal", "Gestural", and "Shadow" type prompts.  Now the results data entry dialog makes this clearer.

Susan DuRant joins AES

Accelerations Educational Software, creators of educational software for individuals with autism and other learning challenges, is pleased to announce the addition of Susan DuRant in our newly established position of Director of Education.

Susan recently retired as Director of Special Education for South Carolina.  Susan brings about 40 years of experience related to regular and special education and is also a parent of an adult with autism.  She started her career as a high school science teacher and taught middle and high school students for 10 years.  About 30 years ago when her daughter was diagnosed with autism, she found educational services for her daughter and children like her were very limited.  She decided to help improve services for students with disabilities and became the Director of Special Education for her local school district.

Over the next 20 years Susan worked as local special education director  in two school districts before she became the Director of Special Education for the state of South Carolina where she worked for the last 8 ½ years.  She has seen significant improvements in services of autism and special needs students in general, but also sees much room for continued improvements.  Susan sees technology and training as a key part of continuing service improvements.

Susan believes that products like the DT Trainer and the Activity Trainer and AES's mission to bring research to practice can make significant improvements in services.  She also likes AES's philosophy on pricing to make these tools affordable and cost effective for a wide range of students, and to take the students further on virtually the same educational dollar.

Susan DuRant and founder Karl Smith, both being parents of children with autism, share a vision to significantly improve educational services for these students who have unique and challenging educational needs.  With highly trained teachers and staff and appropriate technologies, the educational system can improve our children's independence, self determination, quality of life, and ability to become contributing members of society.  Unfortunately, bringing research to practice to actually help make a difference is still a challenge for the educational system.

Susan comes on board to assist in AES's mission to create, distribute, and support effective and affordable educational technology for individuals with autism and other learning challenges.   With AES's first product, the DT Trainer now in over 900 school districts, AES is hiring a team of educators to increase the number of students it assists and supports. In addition to significantly expanding the number of students AES serves in public education, Susan and the team will also help start addressing the needs of the adults.  AES's philosophy has been that education need not stop when students reach adult services if we provide tools for special needs adults to self educate and tools to allow care takers to provide educational supports.

With the explosion of autism, there is a tsunami of individuals approaching adult services that are already stretched.  Susan and Karl recognize the urgency of both providing better services for students so that adult services and costs will be reduced, as well as improving educational services for special needs adults so that they can continue to improve skills as well as independence.
